Editor’s Note

Ask a longtime backpacker to picture the ideal hiking boot, and there's a good chance they end up describing the Mountain Light boot that Danner introduced in 1979. Originally with a GORE-TEX liner, it became one of the boots most associated with rugged, all-weather hiking gear coming out of the US. This edition swaps that formula for warmer climates, replacing GORE-TEX with a Dri-Lex lining built to breathe and dry quickly rather than seal out water entirely. Everything else stays close to the original: a one-piece leather upper with no separate tongue seam, a Vibram Kletterlift outsole built for traction on wet and dry ground alike, and stitchdown construction meant to be resoled rather than replaced. Every pair is still built by hand in Danner's Portland, Oregon factory, out of Horween full-grain leather that develops its own worn-in character over time.
