The brand of ball that won the 1979 Open Championship, and also preferred by James Bond, can be yours in its modern form.
"Penfold. Hearts." James Bond's choice of words from the Ian Fleming novel Goldfinger would echo his iconic "Bond. James Bond." line when referencing his choice of golf ball. The exchange in the novel Goldfinger would go on to play out in the film adaptation of the same name, with Sean Connery and Gert Frobe's on-screen betting match culminating with Bond catching Goldfinger cheating by showing him his Penfold Heart ball.
Before his namesake was immortalized in Bond lore, A.E. Penfold had already made a name for himself by designing the "Maxfli" for Dunlop. Used on tour throughout the twentieth century and culminating as the winning ball used in the 1979 Open Championship, Penfold abruptly became increasingly hard to find for the average player, particularly in North America. That is until recently.
Our set with Penfold includes a dozen of the historic Heart ball that's been updated and upgraded to a modern, soft three-piece along with a dozen of the limited edition Uncrate Spade ball. Identical in construction to the Heart balls, the Uncrate Spade ball offers a larger putting line in contrast to the Heart ball's unique arrow line. Each order includes two dozen total golf balls, with the Heart balls being packaged with their iconic 1927 Penfold deep red livery and the Uncrate Spade balls arriving naturally in a custom black box. Both are ideal for a wide range of players from high-single digit handicaps to the average player.
