The Oceans

Chris Burkard built his reputation photographing surfers on frozen coastlines and ice-choked fjords, where paddling out means dressing for the Arctic rather than the tropics. The Oceans collects that work across all seven seas, from surfers searching out waves between icebergs to seaplanes cutting low along spray-soaked cliffs to aerial shots of Indian Ocean sandbars that read more like abstract paintings than photographs. The book comes bound in full-color linen hardcover with a stitched spine. Burkard pairs the images with his own written essays, turning the collection into as much a record of these waters as a display of them.
