By New Year's Day 1976, Hunter S. Thompson had pioneered gonzo journalism, written Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and covered the 1972 presidential campaign for Rolling Stone. Michael Ochs Archives photographed him that day at his ranch in Colorado, holding a .44 Magnum. Thompson had run for sheriff of Pitkin County on a Freak Power platform in 1970, and he owned a large collection of handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Each framed print is made to order in the U.S. and numbered, with the story behind the photograph attached on the reverse.
