Named for the trees native to the Mojave Desert, Joshua Tree was declared a national monument in 1936 and later a national park in 1994. This U.S. Geological Survey topographic map was created in 1943 and showcases the wilderness area which measures slightly larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.
