Editor’s Note

While he might not be a household name, Lorne Peterson is an Oscar-winning Special Effects artist whose resume includes Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, and Back to the Future films. Presented here is his personal storyboard book from Return of the Jedi. The chief model maker for the miniature and optical effects unit at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Peterson's binder contains 550 pages of storyboards used to ensure the directors, visual effects teams, and cinematographers were on the same page when making the iconic film. Drawings appear on a variety of colored papers, including red, blue, pink, yellow, white, orange, and green, with handwritten notations and handwritten labels on color-coded tabs for organization. Included in the binder are two original hand-drawn storyboards by David Russell. Today, some of his Return of the Jedi storyboards are preserved in the Smithsonian Institution's Star Wars art collection, cementing his legacy in film history. For collectors and film enthusiasts, this Return of the Jedi storyboard binder isn't just memorabilia — it's a tangible connection to the creative process that shaped Star Wars and visual effects as we know them today.
